Compostable bags

Buying compostable bags is one of the best ideas for sustainable business as they are made from bioplastics. These are derived from plant-based products such as potato starch or corn starch.

When we talk about a compostable bag, we mean that it will degrade under composting conditions. The question is: what are these conditions? The truth is that it depends on the model and its characteristics. We'll explain in a moment! But first, don't forget that at Monouso you can buy compostable bags in bulk and with quantity discounts. Or if you prefer, you can take a look at all our models of transparent plastic bags. The choice is yours!

OK Home Compost Bags

The models of ok compost bags take, as a general rule, between 6 months and a year to compost (depending on the model) with a standard composter. Industrial compostable bags, on the other hand, accelerate this process by maintaining the product at temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees Celsius and a relative humidity between 40 and 60 %.

Even if they are not disposed of in this way, they have a shorter life in the environment than other materials. However, this does not mean that they can be misused, so please dispose of them properly.

Compostable bag materials

When it comes to compostable plastic bags, the polymers used are processed natural resources such as potato or corn starch.

These renewable plant-based resources allow the raw material of the plastic to be sourced and converted into bioplastics without the use of petroleum by-products.

Properties of compostable bags

The properties of biodegradable bags are the same as those of polyethylene, i.e. they have the same flexibility, are very strong, waterproof and moisture resistant.

Proper recycling of biodegradable compostable bags:

In terms of recycling, they can be deposited in a purely organic waste bin (which can be composted), but at the moment there are very few such bins and this is still a pending issue for municipalities, whereas they have to be deposited in the "rest" bins (i.e. what is not glass, plastic, metal or paper).

Standards for the regulation of compostables:

There is a standard that regulates compostables of plant origin, compostable and biodegradable, in accordance with the UNE EN 13432:2001 standard.

This European standard specifies the requirements and procedures for determining compostability. These requirements can be summarised as follows:

  • Control of the composition: no elements must be introduced that constitute the material and are harmful to the environment by exceeding the limits of heavy metals, as they are not suitable for organic recovery.
  • And an evaluation: where we will analyse: The components of the material, including heavy metals.
  • We will check its biodegradability, which would be that in 6 months, 90% is degraded.
  • Disintegrate into a predefined maximum size, i.e. into fragments of less than 2×2 mm after 4 months.
  • And above all, the resulting biowaste is suitable for composting.

Biodegradable materials to reduce environmental impact:

Working with compostable bags for trade will help us to reduce this negative impact on the environment and that some people's neglect worsens every day.
